Davie County Habitat
Habitat for Humanity of Davie County, Inc. began as an outreach of “Leadership Davie” from
Davie County High School Class of 1992 and 1993, which selected the organization as their goal.
Leadership Davie was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Davidson
County Community College. Each class was challenged to adopt a project to utilize newly
developed leadership skills. Neal Essic, former Board President and member of the 1993
Leadership Davie class, wrote the By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation for the Davie affiliate
and applied for the 501(c)(3) status with the State of North Carolina. Several members of the
Leadership Davie classes of 1993 and 1993 served on the first Board of Directors, and helped
construct the first house, which was built in 1995. Habitat-Davie was incorporated in 1994, and
governed by the Board of Directors under HfH-International and HfH-State guidelines.
The 1 st Habitat-Davie house was built in 1995. The 19 th home was built and dedicated during
2020. The goal of Habitat-Davie is to construct one house per year, with potential of working
toward the building of two per year. Habitat-Davie has a diverse cross-section of racial ethnicity
with families of Caucasian, Hispanic, and Black heritage becoming homeowners.
Currently there are two paid staff positions: Executive Director and Finance
Manager/Bookkeeper. The Board of Directors is all volunteer. Due to the high level of
community support, Habitat-Davie is healthy and financially sound.
